5 out of 5 stars This receiver is great for Blu-Ray movies ! TrueHD is awesome   December 13, 2008

I just got this from Amazon this week. Got the speakers setup for 5.1 and used the autocalibrate (Audessey) to fine-tune it.

Blu-Ray movies in TrueHD sound is so realistic. Who needs a movie theater?

Here's my setup and how everything is connected:

Onkyo SR606, Samsung BDP-1400 Blu-Ray player, HD cable box and a Samsung 52" HDTV all connected via HDMI through the SR606. Speakers are Polk bookshelf fronts, Bose rears and Yamaha sub. Center is an Athena.

The Blu-Ray player is set to output bitstream and lets the SR606 do the audio encoding. Seems to work fine.

This system is NOT running hot for me. Nice & warm. It has plenty of ventilation so that may be part of the reason.

Good luck with your evaluations and purchase. Hope I was able to help.

Tony

I'll post with any further observations.

5 out of 5 stars 7.1 Sound Harmony   December 13, 2008

This is my second HT Receiver & my second Onkyo. Replaces the TX-NR900 I bought about 8 years ago for a lot more $(still works fine, BTW).
I considered first the 805/806 & 706 models, but w/ the glowing reviews and undeniable value I decided on the 606. I'm happy to finally have an HDMI receiver w/ all the newest format decoding. Having 4 HDMI INs, at this price is great, and I believe, a first. Thankfully, the remote is new & improved. I only wish it had an HD radio tuner built-in and a front panel AUX input to play MP3. In my opinion, this is the best deal

great product/great price.

4 out of 5 stars Love the receiver   December 12, 2008

I love the receiver, it does everything I had wanted it to do and more.

My only complaint is with Amazon: It was super fast shipping no complaints there, but what is going through their minds when they ship a 500 dollar receiver in the original mfg carton?

I was out of town when it was shipped, my wife worked that day till 8PM according to Fedex's tracking report it was dropped off at my doorstep at 11am. So I have this $500 (retail) receiver sitting on my front porch (for 9 hours) in a box with very large bold print all over it that says ONKYO TX-SR606 A/V Receiver. So in other words I have a package from amazon that has a flashing neon sign that says steal me written all over it.

Seriously how hard would it be to put it in another box that is plain?

5 out of 5 stars Awesome features   December 8, 2008
This receiver has many ports and will do what the majority of people need it to do. The receiver even has some built in protection in the event that some of the wires touch while energized. (my neighbor found that part out on his)

The only down side that I have found was that the zone 2 is analog only.(rca type inputs) This can be a problem if you only hook up your devices with a hdmi cable. All that is required is to get an extra cable and hook up your device with the analog cables as well. Not the best solution but it is one that works none the less.

One thing to note is that if you do want to use the speakers in zone 2 without an amp you will have to go in the options and set that port to active. Otherwise the receiver will assume you are hooking up zone 2 to a separate amp.

5 out of 5 stars Still the best for the money   December 6, 2008

After several years of using of my SR600, I accidently shorted out the speaker lines and blew out the audio section. So I went looking for a replacement. After some searching and reviewing, the Onkyo TX-SR606 7.1 floated to the top of the stack. It has more power, HDMI inputs/outputs, sounds even better than the previous model, and was a lot easier to set up. Great receiver at a reasonable price.
