Great Value/Quality in an affordable A/V receiver August 4, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
After reading some of the professional reviews of this receiver, I recently upgraded to this Onkyo 606. Mainly I did it to get the 4 HDMI connections, and so I could pass 'bitstream' to this receiver so it could decode 'DTS-HD Master Audio' and 'Dolby TrueHD' for lossless sound.
I have to say that the setup of this receiver was VERY easy and while my previous Pioneer VSX-1015TX receiver had very good sound, this Onkyo is noticably better. Incredible surround sound clarity with my setup.
I also love how the HDMI connections makes the hookups so much easier and uncluttered, along with the fact that my BluRay and HD-DVD movies played on my Panasonic BluRay and Toshiba HD-DVD players look and sound incredible.
Highly recommended. Great value for the money.
Great Product for this price August 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This product was recommended to me by my friend and I am certainly not disappointed. Lots of inputs and HDMI up conversion works great. I have paired this with Definitive Speakers and it just rocks.
Initial Setup was a little tricky but would I highly recommend this product.
Very good receiver for the price August 1, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I purchased this receiver for two main reasons, price and it had the ability to decode DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD.
I experimented hooking up my DISH DVR via component cables, but was not pleased with that video performance. Prefer using HDMI connections for DISH and Panasonic Blu-ray player, and my son's PS3 when he brings it home from college.
I own a growing number of Blu-ray discs, but have rented many more through Netflix and Blockbuster. Playing the rental disc "Be Kind, Rewind" with DTS-HD audio, I experienced the Onkyo shutting down unexpectedly with E2PROMERROR showing in the display. I went to the Onkyo web site and entered all of the information into the Onkyo Customer Support options and transmitted it in............ Still waiting weeks later to hear back from them..... Hope I never actually need customer support. They do list a phone number also, but had read other reviews complaining about long waits calling that, so I never tried it.
Fortunately, after resetting up the Onkyo, it has been working without the same error, at least so far. There was a kicker, when the Onkyo shut down it lost all its settings, we had no picture for a while. It took me a few minutes to figure out the reason we had no picture was the Onkyo defaulted back to its original settings after the shutdown, and I had overridden the default input settings during the first setup. During the second setup, I did not override the defaults, I just physically changed my HDMI connections to match the defaults.
Before I run out of space, I also wanted to mention the good purchase experience I had. Hours, maybe minutes after I purchased, the price went down, and it continuted to go down over the next couple of weeks. I purchased through Amazon but to partner 6ave. They have a 30 day price policy. The first time I asked about the price it took several days for them to give me a credit, but the next couple times I sent a message that the price had reduced further, they were pretty quick to give me another credit for the difference. Knowing about this policy will make me look for them as a purchaser option when I shop in the future, it takes away one more concern about trying to time the purchase when the price is lowest.
Great Receiver at a Good Price July 31, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
After quite a bit of research, I purchased the Onkyo TX-SR606 from Amazon. I am thoroughly impressed by its quality and performance. It has more than enough bells and whistles for my current home theater setup along with capabilities that I can implement for future enhancements. Installing the receiver took a couple of hours followed by fine-tuning the setup as I learned more about the unit. (The instruction manual should be a bit clearer.) My only hesitation in giving a rating of "5" is that, as noted in other reviews, the quality of satellite TV video switched through the HDMI in/outs on the Onkyo receiver is not as sharp as when the signal is sent directly to my TV from the satellite receiver. So, for the best picture quality, I send my satellite TV signal directly to the TV and switch the sound through the receiver.
Additionally, the price I paid for the unit through Amazon.com was almost $50.00 less than I could find anywhere else, and the shipping was free. You can't beat that!
Onkyo A/V receiver July 31, 2008 Onkyo TX-SR606 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) This is a great receiver, easy to hook up, great instructions. Outstanding audio quality for my Blu-ray, TV and DVD Video combo player. Highly recommended.
