Harmony One January 6, 2009 Works great. My in-laws can finally watch DVD's and generally use all their components. Only minor complaint with the software setup wizard is that for some operations it forced components into the mix that weren't necessarily required.
Pretty, but not so nice January 6, 2009 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I just returned my Harmony One, hopefully for a full refund, after a couple very frustrating weeks of attempted use. I was very excited to replace my complex maze of remotes with a single carefully programmed remote. I have used other simple universal remotes, but this was my first serious remote.
First off, I was somewhat offended by the configuration software. You have to install the software on a host computer, set up an on-line account with Harmony, and then be connected to the internet any time you want to play with the configuration settings. Not a huge problem since I am normally on the network, but I didn't much like it. Nor did I like that my computer now had another icon in the system tray and some more software running in the background all the time.
But the big issue was that I could not get any of the configurations to work reliably. Every time I selected an activity, one of the components would be in the wrong mode. I'd go through the very nice Help function on the Harmony One to resolve the issue, but the next time I'd try to do the same thing something else wouldn't be set right.
After many days of tweaking and re-tweaking I gave up and shipped it back. Maybe my unit was defective. Maybe the narrow IR beam some have complained about was causing my problems. Maybe my components weren't as compatible as Harmony claims. I don't know. In any case I decided I didn't need the frustration. Very disappointed.
Harmony One Remote is a great product, just don't let anything happen to the cord January 6, 2009 This is a wonderful product, and the fact that it does not require batteries is even better. What I found was, that if anything happens to the cord, you can forget about finding a replacement right away. I ordered it through Logitech and they are back ordered on the power cords, and a 5 volt, power cord is hard to find with the required amps. I cannot believe that they are back ordered on this so soon. Makes me think this may be even more of a problem in the future. And from the email I got from Logitech, I don't even know if I will get one in the next 60 days. Oh, they did say that after 90 days they would cancel my order! Meanwhile, forget about using the remote without a power cord.
So Easy & works on all my Components January 6, 2009 Got the Remote, went through the set up process for all my components, set up the groupings & macros per the instructions. Took about 45 minutes. After I have used it for about 2 weeks now & went back in & made some changes based on my actual usage. I am really impressed with how this remote works for every singe function on all my components. I have new & older ones & it works on them all, Satelite DVR, surround sound, LCD flat panel, DVD player, VCR. I would reccomend this remote to anyone that is tired of a bunch of remotes laying around or has a sub par so called universal remote.
Excellent remote. January 5, 2009 This remote has to be in the top 5 inventions ever. I love this thing!
My first experience with aftermarket universal remotes was with some giant square Sony unit about six or seven years ago. I spent a week sending codes from the OEM remotes to the Sony and agonizing over where to designate the buttons on its touch screeen. Lots of second guessing and nearly going insane listening to the beeps every time the Sony learned another command. I think I programmed three components before I'd had enough and boxed it back up and put it on eBay.
A couple of years later I bought a Rotel preamplifier with a nice learning remote that has suited me well the last few years. That is, until I bought my new TV.
This TV, while very nice, has created a few new challenges for me. The speakers are of lesser quality than those on my laptop, so now I have to run the stereo even if I'm just watching the news. The remote also has a lot of buttons I couldn't figure out how I was going to integrate into the Rotel remote. Some don't even have names - just colors. How would I put those on a non touch screen remote?
So up to a few days ago I had to keep two remotes on hand at all times. TV remote to change the channel, stereo remote to adjust the volume. TV remote to change the input to DVD, stereo remote to do the same with the stereo, but I'm happy to say those days are now over.
After about a half hour on the computer, all I have to do now to use my entertainment system is push one button. Watch TV? One button. Watch a DVD? One button. Turn off everything when I'm done? Yep...you guessed it. One button. I looked into doing macros on the Rotel, but I gave up pretty quickly. This is the very first time I've had a remote do multiple commands with the touch of a button and I couldn't be more ecstatic! Programming it was way too easy...I feel like I've somehow cheated.
Another cool thing is how just touching the Harmony One lights up the buttons, making it easy to see in the dark (of course), and also saving another button pushing step. A rechargeable batery also means I'm going to miss those monthly trips to the 7-Eleven for overpriced AAAs about four days after the last set died.
Life is good!
