Fantastic Receiver, Great Quality November 17, 2008 This receiver has excellent sound quality. I have mated it to onkyo SKS HT540 7.1 system in a newly fishid basement. My basement is media area is 15' x 26'. Overall I have 1600 square feet of mostly open finished area. The sound is amazing an fills the entire 1600 square feet with quality and clearity.
I have had no difficulty with loss of picture quality/sound with blu-ray or dvds as reported by other reviewers. The only glitch is with HD cable box. If I go from HD channel to regular digital channel, it sometimes loses picture. However, switching the receiver to an alternate input(like DVD or Radio) and then back to cable resets the pcture and fixes the problem. I believe this problem is inherent to the cable box as the same problem occurs when he converter box is connected directly to the TV.
It is not an easy receiver to program, but works pretty well out-of-the-box. Take yor time read the manual and programming won't be so difficult -even for a novice. In the end it is an incredible bargain and you should be very pleased.
Great home theater performance, Great Price November 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The HK AVR 254 for the money is one of the best deals out there. I like this unit because of all of the features. I needed a receiver with HDMI switching. This has 3 inputs which allows me to connect my cable box, computer, and PS3. One button push on the remote switches nice and easy between them. Also the on screen display for the setup is sweet. I've used a lot of these receivers and the HK display beats them all. Very easy to use menu driven controls. The optimizer mic is just about standard on these receivers now, but is still a nice feature for setting up the sweet spot in the room. All in all. This is a great receiver. Also, for the negative reviews, HK just came out with the Firmware update which fixes all of the bugs in the software concerning blu-ray playback.
Earth Shattering November 1, 2008 OMG....the only reason i bought this one is coz it looks extremely slick. when i connected two tower speakers, no audio :( tried almost an hour and later found that i had inserted the mic infront of the receiver. As soon as i took it out, the sound was golden. Just two tower speakers with dolby surround-wide sounds like 7.1. Then i hooked up two more surround speakers and holy god.....it's earth shattering. I watched transformers and just 4 speakers are kickin' the back. I have ordered Polk PRo series woofer to compliment my system.
Guys, please read the manual properly and setup the system correctly. If you can't figure out then take someone's help who know about audio. once you setup everything correctly, this receiver can easily shatter any glass in your house. Just two tower speakers are shaking the walls of my apartment.
* this is a mid level receiver. for $399 you are getting the best and latest audio formats like TrueHD, Dolby DTS:hd MA....dolby true surround. Before buying this, i read a lot of reviews saying the hdmi is broken. I think they have recently fixed most of the problems.
good luck.
Does it all October 27, 2008 Seems like AVR-254 does everything I could possibly want. I have heard many good reviews about HK receivers and almost bought an Onkyo, but the info I found on forums about reliability and problems of other brands pointed me towards HK. I am very pleased I made the choice. Easy to set up, intuitive (delicious) menu navigation and remote. Plenty of power (although currently only using with 2 speakers), but I am also trying to be nice to my neighbors so may be somewhat skewed measurement. Can't wait to expand to 7.1 surround in the future. Very high quality product at a reasonable price.
Nice mid-range reciever October 24, 2008 This is a great all around reciever. It sounds great matched with Harman/Kardon speakers(HKTS-15 or 18). Has multiroom capability when using a 5.1 speaker set-up. XM radio compatible. Next model up AVR-354 comes slightly more wattage, a learning remote, a multiroom remote, and The Bridge II (iPhone/iPod dock). Next model down AVR-154 is 5.1 only and no multiroom capability.
